In 1888, Sir Frank Bowden purchased a bicycle factory on Raleigh Street, Nottingham, England.
He was approached by Henry Sturmey, a journalist and by an engineer, James Archer. Both had ideas about the design of a 3 speed hub and this resulted in 1902 in the world's first patent for a 3 speed internal gear hub. That tradition continues with Sturmey Archer's current range of products.
Velomaster's trade background with Sturmey Archer began in 1961 when Frank Clavis entered the trade of bicycles. He worked on the bench building hubs into wheels assembling Humber and Phillips bicycles with original equipment Sturmey Archer hubs.
Later years Frank was selling to the trade Sturmey Archer Spares and Hubs and teaching how to service and repair them to dealers.
2010 now sees Sturmey Archer return to New Zealand which coincides with the growth with useage of internal geared hubs.
Velomaster will be carrying an after sales range of parts some for the classic AW 3 speed hubs still being fitted to bicycles of today. We will also be offering the full range of product including the latest 2010 models.
