Frank Clavis was introduced to the bicycle industry in 1961 joining a great family company Hope Gibbons where bicycles were an important part of the company. Hope Gibbons had previously manufactured Empire bicycles at their Summit cycle factory in Wellington.....right next door to the well known HG building.
HG produced a wide range of models from 28" roadster's ( my very first bike Empire Canadian 28") through to high end Empire Superbe racing bikes. But they also made Ladies 26" wheel roadsters. Unfortunately there was fire at Summit Cycles and as World War 2 had just finished, machinery and plant was difficult to get so the Goverment did a deal with HG for their chrome plating plant in exchange for import licince to import bikes from the UK.
Raleigh were the biggest bike manufacturers in the world then so soon Raleigh. Humbers etc made their appearance.
Raleigh made a popular Sports Light Roadster in bth Ladies and Gents models all with Sturmey Archer Gears or a coaster brake hub or freewheel. it was a classic !
